Zero Theft: How Sensos Smart Labels Transformed Bayer’s Logistics Security

by Dr. Christof Backhaus, Innovation Projects Manager at Bayer Crop Science

When you’re responsible for moving millions of euros worth of products across continents, security isn’t just a concern—it’s a mission-critical priority. At Bayer, we faced a growing challenge that was costing us not just money, but potentially lives: theft in our supply chain.

The loss in France and Germany alone was around 2 million euros annually.  Last year, we lost two trucks in Europe.

The financial stakes are enormous. When a theft occurs, we lose not just the products—often valued at €550,000 per truck—but also the vehicles themselves, which can cost between €150,000 to €200,000 each. And then there’s the human cost, which, as I emphasize, “is incalculable.”

From Visibility to Security

Our relationship with Sensos began through a different project entirely. We were implementing their smart Labels for supply chain visibility when we recognized the potential security application.

Having experienced the power of end-to-end visibility with Sensos, we quickly realized we could leverage the same technology to identify exactly where we were losing track of shipments.

The implementation for security purposes was straightforward but strategic. We began applying Sensos smart Labels to pallets of high-value pharmaceuticals, particularly those traveling through high-risk routes. Working in conjunction with our crime investigation team, we established a monitoring protocol that provided real-time location data and alerts for any unusual activity.

Global Protection in High-Risk Environments

The Sensos solution has proven particularly valuable in our operations across Europe and Brazil, where security challenges vary dramatically.

In Brazil, the situation is so dangerous that we only ship goods from our manufacturing sites to distribution centers in military-style convoys with heavily armed guards. The risk of losing shipments of expensive medications is simply too high otherwise.

“At Bayer, theft in our supply chain was costing us millions of euros and potentially lives. We transformed our approach to supply chain integrity by implementing Sensos smart Labels, moving from basic visibility to a proactive security solution that has eliminated thefts.”

Measurable Results

Three Levels of Security Benefits

The ROI of our Sensos implementation extends beyond just numbers. We’ve established a comprehensive security approach:

  1. Complete Visibility: Before Sensos, we only saw our goods at departure and arrival points. Now we have full visibility throughout the entire journey. This continuous monitoring has transformed our logistics oversight.
  2. Early Warning System: The solution provides early alerts that enable us to promptly interact with logistics providers and officials like police or crime investigation teams before situations escalate.
  3. Recovery Capabilities: In theft cases, law enforcement can now identify exactly which warehouses store our stolen goods. This allows them to recover Bayer’s property and create deterrent examples by prosecuting thieves.

The results speak for themselves. Since implementing this project six months ago (as the time of writing this article), we’ve experienced zero thefts. This represents a complete turnaround from our previous situation.

We’re constantly adapting in this ongoing challenge with sophisticated thieves. Previously, we relied solely on truck GPS systems, which criminals easily defeated using jammers or by disconnecting sensors. Our new approach places smart Labels on every pallet, making individual shipments traceable regardless of what happens to the vehicle.

Word is spreading that Bayer tracks its pallets now, creating an additional deterrent effect. For pharmaceutical companies facing similar security challenges, smart Labels represent not just a technological solution but a fundamental shift in how we approach supply chain integrity in a challenging global environment.

Asset Tracking & Demo-Pool Management for a Leading MedTech Company

A leading global medical technology company loses 3–5 high-value MRI/MRT toolkits per year (each toolkit ≈ $200k–$1M). Lack of visibility and missing shock/tamper evidence complicate recovery, insurance claims, and root-cause analysis. This is where Sensos gets it.

Supply Chain Priorities for 2025–2026: Why Real-Time Visibility is No Longer Optional

Global supply chains are entering a critical phase. Rising costs, growing risks, and increasing customer expectations mean that end-to-end visibility is no longer a “nice to have” — it’s mission-critical.
